Tales from Elrond
Small City * Population 9,670 (73% High Elf, 10% Wood Elf, 10% Human, 6% Half-Elf, 1% Other)
The High Forest is all that remains of a vast ancient elven kingdom. Thousands of years of wars, plague, climate change and expansion from other kingdoms has significantly reduced the kingdom to its current holdings. While not isolationists, the elves of the High Forest tend to keep to themselves. They do trade with neighboring settlements and tolerate outsiders, as long as they come with a purpose that does not interfere with the elves’ way of life. In addition to the elves, other inhabitants are fey creatures, treants, centaurs and other woodland folk. Human barbarians of the Tree Ghost Uthgardt Tribe also make their home in the High Forest, roaming within its borders and sometimes outside them. They are reclusive and rarely trouble travelers or the forest’s other inhabitants. The elves tolerate the humans because they do not cause trouble.
Two locations of note in the High Forest are the Fountains of Memory and the Shadowtop Cathedral. The Fountains are two magical pools of clean still water that reflect back scenes from the past instead of the surrounding area. There are certain rituals that can manipulate the pools to reflect specific images from the past, though these images are not always from the vantage point that the requestor wants and may not be available as the more time that has passed the harder it is to retrieve a scene. Legend has it that people who enter the pools can go back to a time in their past but any who have does so have never been heard or seen from again. The Shadowtop Cathedral is located in the oldest part of the forest and is a section of ancient closely packed towering trees whose dark canopies form a high roof that permits only hints of sunlight to touch the ground beneath. Despite its seemingly ominous atmosphere, the Shadowtop Cathedral is a meeting place for the Emerald Enclave.
